Excellence in Health Care
Milwaukee has a respected medical community that includes
educational and research facilities; integrated health care
systems that coordinate clinic, inpatient and outpatient care;
several specialty hospitals and a variety of health care plans
ranging from traditional fee-for-service programs to health
maintenance organizations (HMOs), and accountable care
organizations (ACOs). The
Milwaukee Regional Medical Center
,
a sprawling campus of hospitals, outpatient clinics, health-
related educational facilities and research centers, is located in
the center of the metropolitan area. It includes
Children’s
Hospital of Wisconsin
, a 306-bed, acute-care hospital that is
consistently ranked one of the best children’s hospitals in the
nation;
Froedtert Hospital
, which operates the state’s only
Level 1 Trauma Center; the
Medical College of Wisconsin
, one
of the nation’s largest private medical schools; the
BloodCenter
of Wisconsin
, which operates an internationally recognized
blood research center; and the
Curative Care Network
, which is
one of the most comprehensive rehabilitation centers in the
country.
The regional medical center isn’t the only place offering
advanced medical care, however.
Aurora St. Luke’s Medical
Center
in Milwaukee is the largest hospital in the state and is
na onally recognized for quality and efficiency.
Southeastern Wisconsin’s hospitals and health care sys-
tems, already national leaders in health care quality, are also
making major investments to further improve the quality and
efficiency of the care they provide:
Froedtert Hospital & The Medical College of Wisconsin
recently opened the Center for Advanced Care, a $140 mil-
lion facility that will consolidate surgical suites and house the
providers’ transplant services and its Heart and Vascular
Center. It is part of a larger $240 million renovation and
expansion project slated to be completed in 2020.
The
UW Cancer Center at ProHealth Care
also opened in
2015, bringing together the expertise of
UW Health
and
ProHealth Care
at its Pewaukee Campus
Aurora Health Care
is partnering with
Marquette University
to build a $120 million Athletic Performance Research
Center adjacent to the university’s campus
Community Memorial Hospital
is undergoing a $17 million
expansion
Area Health Systems
As is true in most regions of the country, independent hospitals
in southeastern Wisconsin have given way to integrated health
care systems that bring together hospitals, clinics, physicians
and specialty providers such as home health agencies and
hospice. Five health systems serve the Milwaukee area:
Aurora Health Care
,
Ascension Health
, which includes the
Columbia St. Mary’s
and
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare
systems;
Froedtert Health
,
ProHealth Care
and
Children’s
Health System.
Finding the
right physicians
Choosing a primary care physician is one
of the most important decisions you will
make when you move to the area. Your
selection will impact the health and well-
being of you and your family. In
southeastern Wisconsin, most physicians
are affiliated with one of the region’s five
integrated health systems, so when you
select a physician you are selecting a
health system as well.
Health systems have web-based tools
(including videos) that can help you
find and evaluate physicians (please
see health system listings for
telephone numbers and websites)
Myhealthwi.com rates primary care
physicians on both quality and
efficiency by geographic area
wchq.org rates physician groups and
health systems on quality measures
