The Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, a sprawling campus of hospitals, outpatient clinics, health-related educational facilities and research centers, is located in the center of the metropolitan area. It includes Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, a 222-bed acute-care hospital; Froedtert Memorial Hospital, which operates the state’s only Level 1 Trauma Center; the Medical College of Wisconsin, one of the nation’s largest private medical schools; the Blood Center of Wisconsin, which operates an internationally recognized research center; and Curative Rehabilitation Center, one of the most comprehensive rehabilitation centers in the country.

Most of the region’s hospitals are part of an integrated health care system, which brings together hospitals, clinics, physicians and specialty providers, such as lab services and home health agencies. The four largest hospital systems in the Milwaukee area are Aurora Health Care, Columbia St. Mary’s, Froedtert & Community Health and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Other hospital systems include ProHealthcare, which serves Waukesha County; and Synergy Health, which serves Washington County.

Nearly 75 percent of the people living in the metropolitan area are enrolled in broad-network health maintenance organizations (HMO), preferred provider organizations (PPO) or point-of-service plans (POS). Most large Milwaukee-area employers self-fund their insurance plans and a handful of companies operate their own medical clinics or contract with health care providers. The state also offers health insurance to high-risk individuals through its Health Insurance Risk-Sharing Plan (HIRSP).
