Relocation Guide 2019-2020

Take Some Selfies Like sharing selfies? We’ve got plenty of photo ops that are just perfect for posting to your social media accounts! You’ll have to do a citywide scavenger hunt to find them all, as there are so many, but check these out to get yourself started: Solomon Juneau’s Log Cabin , the Bronz Fonz , the Hoan Bridge , Gertie and Her Duckling , Milwaukee’s own “ Eiffel Tower ,” the Sunburst sculpture and the historic North Point Lighthouse . Try the Food We’ve got more than our share of tasty traditions! Let’s start with cheese, since we’ve got a lot of it. One of our favorite cheesy treats is cheese curds – cold or deep-fried with dipping sauces, it’s all about the squeak. Tailgating is an art form here! When the Brewers are at Miller Park, grills are smoking, beer is flowing, and Frisbees are flying long before the Anthem is sung. There’s a variety of sausages on those grills, especially German bratwursts or “ brats ,” because we sure do love ‘em! So much so that our sausages run a race during games! Friday nights here are devoted to fish fries , served with potato pancakes, applesauce, marble rye and coleslaw. Most restaurants offer them, and not just during Lent! A Sunday staple is a lunch of hot ham and rolls , offered at deli counters everywhere. We’re also known for frozen custard , which is thicker and tastier than ice cream and offered in both classic and crafted flavors. It’s enjoyed year-round. Even a Polar Vortex won’t stop locals from stopping at Kopp’s , Culver’s or Leon’s for a scoop or two! For more on our food scene, see page 22. Great food is best paired with local beverages. Our brewing heritage means we have a broad selection of local craft beers from which to choose (see page 15), as well as craft spirits and regional wines, but we love our brandy as well. If Wisconsin mac and cheese is comfort food, the Brandy Old-Fashioned is our comfort drink! Supper clubs and iconic bars prepare the classic version, and trendier spots explore new and exciting seasonal versions. Sunday brunch calls for a Bloody Mary, Milwaukee-style – garnished with sausage sticks, sliders, mini grilled cheese, bacon and more -- the local version marries food with drink in one spectacular package and often comes with a beer chaser! Get Outside! The natural beauty of our varied topography provides for a full slate of adventures. You will hear people talk about “ going up north ” or opening the cottage. It seems most everyone has a lake place in the family or their circle of friends. Summer means boating , swimming , fishing and more. Winter means snowmobiling , snowshoeing and cross-country skiing . Deer Camp is the annual ritual of deer hunting. Up North is generally defined as the upper half of the state, but it’s also a state of mind. For those who can’t get out town, rustic Camp Bar , with three locations in the area, recreates that Northwoods feel. Beautiful Door County , situated on Wisconsin’s northeast “thumb” features orchards, wineries, golf courses, quaint villages and state parks. 96 YOUR RELOCATION RESOURCE It might help to know a few words and phrases, so you aren’t left in the dark. Thirsty? Ask where the bubbler is, not the drinking fountain. Need some fizz? It’s soda here, not pop. The Lake Effect is a meteorologi- cal occurrence you’ll discover soon enough. Lastly, many folks end their sentences with an “ eh? ” as in: “That’s a pretty good brat, eh?” Learn the Lingo See the Sights There’s so much to see in the region that we couldn’t hope to share it all! Part of the fun in relocating is to get out and explore all that the area has to offer! We have everything from world-class beaches like downtown MIlwaukee’s Bradford Beach , a glorious stretch of golden sand perfect for volleyball or just relaxing in the sun, to the distinctive Milwaukee Art Museum with it’s brise-soleil “wings” (above) that open and close daily, to Holy Hill in Washington County that offers a panoramic view of the Kettle Moraine .
