Milwaukee has a respected medical community that includes educational and research facilities; integrated health care systems that coordinate clinic, inpatient and outpatient care; several specialty hospitals, and a variety of health care plans ranging from traditional fee-for-service programs to health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and accountable care organizations (ACOs).Three hospitals – Aurora St. Luke's Medical CenterChildren's Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of Wisconsin – are ranked nationally in multiple specialties by U.S. News & World Report.

The Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, a sprawling campus of hospitals, outpatient clinics, health-related educational facilities and research centers, includes Children’s Wisconsin, which is consistently ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation; Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of Wisconsin, which operates the region’s only Level 1 trauma center; and Versiti Wisconsin, which operates an internationally recognized blood research center.

Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center is the largest hospital in the state. Other significant health offerings in the area include: ProHealth and UW Health, which have joined in a partnership to operate the UW Cancer Center at ProHealth in Pewaukee; and Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee, which houses the region’s advanced burn center.
